Actually, opal is one of the most sensitive gemstones found in fine jewelry.
You can wash your hands with it though.
Basically, an opal can crack if allowed to get too dry. You could make this happen by exposing your opal to very high heat or prolonged dry heat. (1oo years in a closet in Arizona).
Harsh chemicals (like acid) can damage the opal because it is porous.
But basic hand washing should be okay.
The website below has lots of good info on opals.

when did this thing start?
what is it’s significance?
http://www.purityrings.com/
It’s a silly fad that seems to rear its head every now and then. The current crop of rings was inspired by The Jonas Brothers, which is Disney’s latest cash-cow. The band started wearing purity rings and generated a ton of publicity over it (unfortunately), which started the current trend. Britney Spears started a similar trend back when she was claiming to be a virgin, waiting for marriage.
Basically, the rings are suppose to signify that a person is waiting until marriage or until the ‘right person’ comes along to have sex and/or do anything remotely sexual (making out, dry humping, etc.) In reality, it’s just a cash grab being made by retailers who want to capitalize on the trend by selling the rings to kids. You could just as easily buy a cheap, non-specific ring and use it to remind yourself of your promise, and it’s not like you need any ring to stick to your principles anyway. The whole thing is about marketing, and teens everyone was swallowing it whole.
Some church groups have their youth groups take pledges promising to wait until marriage, and give them rings to symbolize that. In those cases, they’re probably genuine about their message, which is more than I can say for Disney’s purity ring craze.
The whole pledge/ring thing is kind of silly, since its success rate is ridiculous low. Only a small fraction of the kids who take the pledge end up staying ‘pure’ until marriage.
