From what i can gather (see refs below), iron-opal may be some kind of chalcedony. It’s far rarer then some (like carnelian) and quite obviously banded. On the other hand, there was a bracelet being offered for sale on one of the few sites i could find for this term, and the stone seemed to have a true opalesence look to it.
So i don’t know.
I’ve been a cut gemstones collector for years and have never heard of ‘iron opal’. However, new stones turn up all the time!

Opal, the queen of gems – besides Australia, there is only one other place in the world where one finds crystal opal in commercial quantities: the Brazilian village of Pedro Segundo.

I don’t know why but there seems to be no word for Opal in Urdu. Most dictionaries say "aik doodhia pathar" i.e. "A whitish or milky stone".

I know diamonds are the hardest gemstone, but what follow that? I am looking for alternatives to traditional diamond engagement rings because I don’t care for large diamonds, and have been thinking of a different main stone with tiny diamonds around it. Besides rubies, saphires, and emeralds, what other stones would stand up to so much wear? I prefer opals but have been told they break easily.
Any ideas? Links with pictures would be greatly appreciated!
Looking for suggestions OTHER than diamonds, rubies, saphires, and emeralds please thank you!
JADE IS VERY HARD
Just showing the play-of-color of these opals. All (except #6) are raw or semi-raw, and generally not “normal” loose opals destined for jewelry. I find these prettier than the opals you find at jewelry stores, and make them into pendants anyhow.
